How The Rankings Are Calculated
NOTE: SolarQuotes collects reviews of any Australian solar installer, but our installer ranking tables only list clients in the SolarQuotes network actively receiving referrals from us. This means these lists will always note businesses both actively quoting and carefully screened by us. A universal method for ranking organisations or products based on their reviews is a topic of some debate. While many might think just using the average rating is the way to do it, it’s not quite that simple.
For example, it’s a lot easier for a company with 2 reviews to have a higher average score than even the best company with 1,000 reviews.
We list hundreds of solar power system installation companies and panel, battery and inverter manufacturers here on SolarQuotes. The reviews of each range from 1 to more than 1,000.
Here’s my method for ranking the companies – and while I’m not claiming it’s perfect, at least you’ll understand how it’s done.
Star Ratings And Points
Using this model for “most good reviews”, we assign points for 4 and 5 star reviews and deduct them for 1,2 or 3 star reviews. The logic behind this is that it’s no good having lots of reviews if most of them are negative!
Here’s how each review is scored:
- 1 star is -3 points
- 2 stars is -2 points
- 3 stars is -1 point
- 4 stars is +1 point
- 5 star is +2 points
We then add up the points and the highest score “wins”. This ranking system will favour bigger companies consistently rated “good” (4 stars) or “fantastic” (5 stars). And as mentioned, for solar installers only, that company also has to be an active SolarQuotes client to appear on the ranking tables.
