SolarEdge solar batteries reviews

SolarEdge is an Israeli company best known for manufacturing solar inverters and power optimisers, but it has recently branched out into manufacturing battery storage.

Formally launched in Australia in late March 2022, the SolarEdge Home Battery offers 9.7 kilowatt-hours of usable storage and can crank 5 kilowatts of continuous power.

A DC coupled energy storage solution, it is backup capable - but that requires extra equipment and therefore extra cost. A SolarEdge Energy Hub single phase inverter and a Backup Box is needed for backup functionality. Use without backup requires either a SolarEdge HD-Wave Genesis or HD-Wave EV inverter.

On a related note, the company doesn't recommend this battery be used for off-grid applications.

The system can be installed indoors or outdoors and wall or floor mounted; with the latter requiring the purchase of a floor mount.

The SolarEdge Home Battery warranty is pretty good compared to some other manufacturers - 10 years and unlimited cycles.

A Unique Battery Safety Feature

In terms of safety, this battery sysytem has a really interesting feature - a built in fire extinguisher that will engage should the internal temperature rise too high. But prior to this happening, the system will alert SolarEdge and the owner to a heat issue requiring attention.

With an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure, this is a really good idea as once that extinguisher is in a situation where it engages, the battery will be pretty much toast. But thanks to this intervention, hopefully not thoroughly burnt toast taking the home with it.
