Sunways was founded in Konstanz, Germany back in 1993. The firm was acquired by Suntech’s parent company, Shunfung Clean Energy Group in 2014. After this acquisition, manufacturing of Sunways inverters was shifted to China to reduce production costs.
In early 2021, Suntech announced the first Sunways inverter products would be available in Australia around late February/early March 2021. These were to be single-phase units, with three-phase inverters to follow a couple of months later.
Sunways Inverters In Australia
As at mid 2023, the two main product lines available in Australia are the STS (single-phase ) and STT (three-phase). You can find specifications for these products on SolarQuotes solar inverter comparison table.
One of the distinguishing aspects of Sunways inverter products is the standard warranty for the Australian market is 12 years on both single and three-phase products. This is quite generous for an inverter in the lower price range, with some competing products still only offering 5 years standard warranty. As an inverter is the real workhorse of a solar power system, that longer warranty provides some additional peace of mind.
Speaking of price, another aspect of Sunways solar products that will be particularly attractive to some is compared to top-end brands they are significantly cheaper.
Our Recommendation
While it remains to be seen how Sunways inverters perform in Australian conditions over the long term, we've received some initial positive feedback from independent testing here in Australia. Among the items noted was was the good build quality, built-in compliant DC isolator, simplicity of commissioning and great wifi range.
With Suntech backing the brand in Australia - a respected company that has been around for a very long time and has a physical presence here - that provides some reassurance to Sunways solar inverter owners that they won't be left in the lurch if they experience problems. And to date, we haven't heard of any serious issues.
Given all this, Sunways is currently listed as an SQ recommended solar inverter brand.

Compact unit that fitted nicely inside the garage in a space that wasn't used.
Delighted with the generation of energy even on these cold Tassie mornings (when the sun was out)
A minor Switchboard upgrade was required, not a great cost.

Inverter fails to find maximum power point constantly, locking at ~0.1A or ~80V, curtailing production dramatically (~300W when it should be multiple kW)
Months of followup with distributor and no fixes to date, only promises of future firmware fixes and that this is an entirely new issue for them to solve with R&D team.
Followup with installer has not resulted in any solution or alternatives and response has been minimal and delayed.
System installed at end of summer, but on the one clear sunny day (24C) in Jan the inverter thermally tripped out at 75C for an hour due to overheating, curtailing from 6kW to 1kW for 1hour until temp reached 55C (Passive cooled only, located in full shade, in Hobart, TAS)
